Police search leads to drug charges for 5 people

On a Thursday in November, five California residents were arrested on drug charges in Santa Cruz. The arrest took place after police conducted a search of a house. Street Crimes Unit officers say they conducted a probation search at the house after they were allegedly tipped off about drug-related activity at the residence, though no information was divulged as to the specific basis for carrying out the probation.

Police claim they found a box of more than 100 used hypodermic needles and a methamphetamine pipe and other drug paraphernalia. Police also say they seized cooking spoons used for methamphetamine and several bottles of narcotic pills and marijuana in the home.

A 29-year-old man and a 37-year-old woman were arrested on suspicion of being under the influence and possessing drug paraphernalia. Two other persons were arrested on various drug charges, including suspicion of possessing controlled substance paraphernalia and suspicion of possessing marijuana. A fifth person was arrested for allegedly violating probation and forging a prescription. California authorities say the forgery arrest was from a different case in which the suspect allegedly brought an altered prescription into a local pharmacy in an effort to get narcotics.

This case has many different parts to it that need to be looked at objectively and in detail. Although four of the suspects were arrested on drug charges, the charges may not be of the same severity. The charges filed against the fifth person are unrelated to the alleged activities of the other four persons.

Each of the individuals arrested will most likely face different legal challenges as their respective cases move through the courts. However, each individual must be treated fairly and distinctly, and allegations against one are not necessarily relevant against the others.
