More gun control may be on its way in California

Our Roseville, California, readers may not be aware, but recently more gun control legislation made its way successfully through the California Legislature to land on Gov. Jerry Brown's desk for his signature. The legislation would make the open display of rifles a misdemeanor weapons charge, with those convicted of the crime subject to a six-month jail term or $1,000 fine.

The lawmakers in favor of this new law argued that the ban would help promote public safety and increase public and police safety when authorities are called to a crime scene. The argument goes that if police respond to a scene and do not know if a gun owner is carrying a loaded or unloaded gun, the situation may unravel quickly.

There has been, of course, significant push-back on the proposed law by enthusiastic Second Amendment supporters. This side of the argument claims that being able to openly carry unloaded rifles promotes individual's Second Amendment right to bear arms, even though the bill includes certain exemptions for retired police officers, those engaged in target shooting and people involved with a gun show. Those who carry unloaded rifles in a vehicle's gun rack would also avoid prosecution under this new law.

California is widely known as a heavy gun control state, and certain weapons crimes can lead to the potential for significant prison sentences or fines. Although many would say that the pendulum of public support has swung back in favor of loosening gun control laws in recent years, California, as evidenced by this new law, continues to move forward with restrictions on gun owners. Anyone who believes they may have been wrongly charged with a weapons charge should be sure to get the most accurate information in order to battle overly enthusiastic prosecution cases.
