Man in nearby Elk Grove faces sex crimes charges

Some of our Roseville readers may be familiar with the social media phenomena known as "sexting," which involves sending sexual-charged statements or photos via text messaging. Most of the coverage of this type of behavior in the news media usually focuses on the behavior of teens, and sometimes the worst that happens is that a student gets suspended or expelled from school for it. However, the result was much different for a 48-year-old man in nearby Elk Grove.

According to the reports, this man was arrested for "sexting" because the alleged recipient was a 16-year-old girl. He was initially being held in the Sacramento County Jail, and a bond amount was not immediately available. Apparently since the behavior was between an adult and a minor, it resulted in charges of distribution of lewd material to a minor and communicating with a minor with intent to commit a sex offense. The charge related to solicitation of a minor could be one that, if the man is convicted, would require him to become a registered sex offender.

Society is getting more comfortable with social media contact, whether it is online through email, Facebook or other means, or through contact via mobile phone. But, unfortunately, most of our readers know that these means of communication can be used in the wrong way.

The 48-year-old man in this case has a lot on the line in his defense against these criminal charges. The man, according to the reports, is a personal coach of student athletes - a position that could be next to impossible to remain in now that he has these criminal charges hanging over his head. That is the sad reality with sex crimes charges - if the charges are ultimately dropped or if the accused is found not guilty, the stigma of the charges could remain long afterward.
