Federal indictment includes weapons charge for 7 people

Federal charges have been filed against seven California individuals for allegedly taking part in an attempt to smuggle illegal firearms. At least one of those arrested also faces a state weapons charge. Police believe that the intended recipient of the firearms is a large cartel located outside of the country.

Authorities began investigating the suspected gun smuggling operation back in March of 2014. According to the indictment, the individuals believed to be involved allegedly falsified applications when purchasing firearms from reputable dealers. The man accused of heading the smuggling operation also faces charges for issuing false statements during the acquisition of firearms.

Once the smugglers had the guns in their possession, they apparently planned to smuggle them across the border and deliver them to a well-known drug cartel. Police claim that they intercepted several different types of firearms during smuggling attempts, including various rifles and AK-47s. Firearms had also been seized in previous arrests related to the suspected operation.

Currently, all seven defendants are behind bars without the opportunity to post bail, and they have all pleaded not guilty. However, as both federal and state charges are in the mix, preparations for their defense will likely take careful review and planning. When facing a serious weapons charge in California, a defendant would likely benefit from a thorough examination of his or her charges with the help of defense counsel. Although there are multiple strategies regularly used to defend accused individuals -- including plea deals and fighting the charges in court -- it is not always immediately clear which strategy best fits each individual's needs.
