Holiday DUI arrests showed increase from previous year

The holiday season is a time for making merry, and many people use alcohol as part of their festivities. However, these same people would be wise not to get behind the wheel of a vehicle after consuming too much alcohol as doing so could result in a DUI arrest. Unfortunately, the number of drunk driving arrests during the 2015 holiday season increased throughout the state of California from 2014.

The California Highway Patrol reported that over the Christmas weekend for 2015, they made 608 DUI-related arrests. During the same period the previous year, they arrested 565 individuals for drunk driving. The arrests occurred between 6 p.m. on Thursday, December 24 to 6 a.m. on Sunday, December 27.

On a positive note, the number of DUI-related fatalities actually went down, according to reports from all of the state's law enforcement agencies. In 2014, agencies reported 18 fatalities related to drunk driving over the Christmas weekend but reported 14 for the same period in 2015. For San Diego County, the number of arrests reported remained the same for both years during that time at 34, and the number of fatalities reported, two, also did not change. Orange County reported a slight increase in DUI arrests, from 29 to 33, with no fatalities.

While everyone likes to get together with friends and family over the holidays and enjoy the festivities of the season, everyone must also keep in mind that doing so can result in serious, and sometimes fatal, consequences should a person elect to drive while intoxicated. Anyone in California who has been arrested for DUI would need to seek experienced legal counsel in order to fully understand his or her legal options. Doing so can help in pursuing the most favorable outcome for a specific situation.
