Woman faces DUI charges following fatal crash

One woman in California was recently arrested on charges of drinking and driving. The woman's DUI arrest was made in connection with a vehicle accident in which police said she killed the driver of a big rig. The crash occurred while the truck driver was reportedly standing outside of his truck.

The fatal accident occurred along westbound Interstate 80. Authorities said the truck driver had pulled over to one side of the interstate at a little past 6 p.m. He was standing behind his rig's rear trailer when the woman suddenly entered the shoulder of the road to avoid traffic that was moving more slowly.

The 51-year-old big rig driver ended up dying at the accident scene; he is survived by a grown son. Ironically, the truck driver's own father had passed away not long before the deadly accident. The 26-year-old woman reportedly involved in the collision has been charged with DUI as well as vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated; she was being held in a county jail on a bail of $250,000.

As the case goes forward, the woman facing DUI charges in California -- alongside her legal counsel -- might have the chance to negotiate a plea deal in exchange for lighter charges or personally favorable sentencing considerations. The choice of whether to accept a plea deal, if offered, rests with the client. The accused has the right to go straight to trial on the merits rather than striking a plea deal with the prosecution if she considers this to be in her best interests.
