Man convicted of sexual assault in California

One man in California was charged with sexually assaulting children related to him. Police said the sexual assault incidents involved four children in the man's family. The man was recently convicted of the crimes.

According to authorities, the man, 45, molested two young girls in his family. He also molested two other members of his extended family. The children were sexually assaulted when they were between 4 years old and 11 years old. Specifically, the man is said to have touched the children when they were in a separate room from their parents and while they were sleeping.

The man ended up being convicted of engaging in lewd acts with a minor who was younger than 14 years old (nine counts), including doing the same by force (two counts). Officials said the molestation took place in three different California counties. The man, who has a history of having child pornography and soliciting a child to take part in sex acts, may face up to 170 years behind prison bars.

When a person is accused of sexual assault, he or she has the right to proceed to trial to contest the charges. At trial, the prosecution must prove the charges beyond a reasonable doubt before a conviction can happen. This standard exists with the goal of preventing innocent people from being found guilty of crimes and sentenced for them. A thorough look at the evidence may very well be a chief area of focus for the criminal defense when defending an individual in this type of criminal case in California.
