Man faces drug charges, weapons charge in California

One man in California has been accused of illegally cultivating marijuana. The man, however, claimed that he really has been growing medical marijuana for ailing and disabled veterans under a special program. He has recently pleaded not guilty in court to drug charges and a weapons charge.

The 44-year-old man was arraigned on a misdemeanor count and four felonies in connection with growing marijuana. His charges include possessing marijuana and intending to sell it, illegally growing marijuana and possessing an assault weapon, as well as possessing an injecting-smoking device. His bail was additionally recently decreased from $110,000 to $85,000.

Police arrested the man on a recent Friday after searching his property. They said they got rid of more than 1,800 marijuana plants that were growing at a couple of cultivation sites outdoors. Enforcement agents with the state's fish and wildlife agency also reportedly found 12 firearms, which included a couple of assault rifles, along with digital scales and packaging materials. Nearly 75 pounds of marijuana that had already been processed were also allegedly found.

If appropriate to the circumstances of a defendant facing a drug or weapons charge in California, the criminal defense may explore the chance of striking a plea deal with the prosecution. A plea agreement might offer the advantage of resulting in a more lenient sentence compared with what would usually be rendered following a finding of guilt at trial. However, instead of striking a plea deal, the defendant may simply decide to proceed to trial to fight the charges if he believes this to be in his best interests.
