Man accused of sexual assault in California

A man in California currently faces sex crime charges. Specifically, he has been accused of sexual assault. The two victims he is said to have molested are young girls.

The man has been charged with lewd acts with someone under the age of 14 (four counts) as well as lewd acts with someone age 14 or 15 (three counts). The other charges include aggravated sexual assault using an object on a child (one count) and aggravated sexual assault involving someone younger than 14 (one count). The man facing these charges is 29 years old.

It was not revealed what the victims' relationships, if any, were to the man. However, it was confirmed that the man held no positions that provided him with access to youth in the community. Court records showed that the man's first crime reportedly occurred in June 2006, while the one occurring more recently took place in May 2012. The man is being held on a bail of $1 million.

As the man's sexual assault case moves forward through the California criminal justice system, he might have the chance to negotiate a plea deal -- alongside his legal counsel -- in exchange for lesser charges or sentencing considerations that are more personally favorable than what would result following a guilty verdict at trial. The decision of whether to take a plea deal, if one is offered, rests completely with the defendant. The accused person has the right to go to trial on the merits if he considers it to be in his best interest, a decision that is necessarily based upon the weight of the evidence to be offered against him in court.
