Soap-opera actress accused of DUI in California

One relatively high-profile individual currently faces a felony drunk driving charge in California. The DUI charge came after a head-on crash that took place earlier this year. The woman who has been charged is soap-opera actress Jensen Buchanan, 53, who appeared for arraignment recently.

The crash reportedly occurred when the woman decided to drive her vehicle while her blood alcohol content was 0.34. She was driving along Highway 154 when, according to prosecutors, the woman breached the highway's double yellow line and collided with a compact car head-on. The 56-year-old individual driving the compact car that was hit suffered severe injuries.

Authorities had to extricate the compact car's driver from his automobile, and he was then flown by helicopter to a hospital. The woman was also transported to the hospital for the treatment of minor injuries and afterward was taken into custody on suspicion of driving under the influence. She ended up posting $100,000 bail within 24 hours. At her recent arraignment, the woman failed to enter a plea to the charges associated with the car crash -- the second time she has not entered a plea. Her arraignment was continued to early September.

When a person is accused of driving under the influence, he or she may choose to fight the DUI charge at trial or may seek to negotiate a plea deal with the prosecution. A plea agreement might offer the benefit of leading to a reduced charge and/or a lighter sentence than what would typically result from a guilty verdict at trial. Either way, the criminal defense will strive for an outcome that is ultimately in the accused person's best interest in California.
