Federal jury finds man guilty of child pornography

A federal jury recently found a California man guilty of a sex-related crime. Specifically, he was found guilty of possessing child pornography. The man is 30 years old.

Authorities said they obtained a search warrant and served it at the man's house back in 2012. At that time, the man reportedly admitted to police that any child pornography they uncovered did belong to him. Police said the man even provided the agents with a description of what they would uncover.

Police reported that the pornographic material found in his home included children who were 4 years old. He is expected to undergo sentencing in December. He faces a maximum of 10 years behind prison bars as well as a fine of $250,000.

A person accused of child pornography in California has the right to proceed to trial to fight the charge. At trial, the prosecution has to prove the charge beyond a reasonable doubt before a conviction can happen. This standard exists in an effort to prevent innocent individuals from being accused of and punished for crimes they did not commit. If the evidence suggests that it may be more beneficial for the accused to seek to negotiate a plea deal, the defendant may do so with the hopes of receiving a lesser charge or a lighter sentence than what would be imposed following a guilty verdict at trial. Whether a defendant goes to trial or pursues negotiations for a plea agreement, defense counsel will strive for an outcome that is in the best interests of the client.
