Man charged with DUI, murder in connection with fatal crash

A man in California currently faces a murder charge after reportedly being involved in a fatal accident. He also faces other criminal charges, including DUI. The accident, which took place on a recent Sunday, led to the death of a 22-year-old man.

According to authorities, the man facing charges was driving a car north along Highway 41 when he entered the lane going south. An oncoming pickup truck swerved to avoid an accident, but the car driver allegedly returned to the lane going north and hit the truck head on. Police said they believed that the driver of the car was intoxicated when the accident happened.

The front passenger in the car died in the collision, and the car's driver and two other people riding in the car were transported to the hospital with major injuries. The pickup truck driver suffered no injuries. The car driver, 20, was taken into custody on suspicion of not only murder but also DUI leading to injury, DUI with a blood alcohol level that was greater than .08 percent, child endangerment, gross vehicular manslaughter and driving with a license that was revoked or suspended.

The man, whose bail was set at $1.23 million, may decide to proceed to trial to fight the serious DUI and other criminal charges filed against him in California. He may also choose to seek to negotiate a plea deal with prosecutors, if one is available. The potential benefit of a plea deal is that it may lead to lesser charges and thus a lighter sentence than what would typically result following a guilty verdict at trial.
