Gun crimes in California: The statistics

Gun crimes are often in the news because of their serious nature; they're violent and scary. Weapons need to be used with caution, and those who take advantage of the right to carry them risk their lives and the lives of others. There are people who carry safely and in order to protect themselves. Not everyone who fires a gun and causes another person's death is guilty of murder; some cases are a result of self-defense and other circumstances.

Here are some facts about gun crimes you may not know. California was the state with the most gun murders in 2010, with 1,790 people killed with those weapons. In 2011, the number of gun murders had dropped by 3 percent from the year before with 1,220 total murders around the state. That's around 3.25 murders per 100,000 in the state and 68 percent of all murders around the entire United States.

While gun crimes are down in many states for the data in 2011, there was an increase in North Carolina, Louisiana, Arkansas and Indiana. Several smaller states also saw an uptick in gun crimes.

It's important to note that the United States has the highest rate of gun ownership in the world. For every 100 Americans, there are 89 guns among them. In countries such as England or Wales, the number of guns per 100 equal out to around six. Around 8,583 murders were caused by guns in the United States in 2011.

If you're accused of a gun crime, know that you have a right to an attorney and to protecting your reputation. You are not guilty until proven to be so.
